I have always loved the Library. From the moment I stepped onto CMU’s campus as a Freshman, I have always taken advantage of the Library. This semester, on top of simply spending countless hours in the Library studying, I decided to join the Library Committee.
A library committee? Is that really a thing? YES. YES IT IS. In fact, I was an acting student representative on that committee for the 2017-2018 academic year. I chose to be a part of this academic senate committee because I thoroughly enjoy spending time at the Library and I wanted to be able to (1) share my affirmations, and (2) provide feedback on how to possibly alter the space to attract other students.
The Library committee is composed of about 15-20 people. Myself and 3 other students acted as student representatives. There was also a chair of the committee, a secretary, and then a handful of faculty members from various departments. The Dean of Libraries was also present at all meetings. We met the first Monday of every month from about 5pm-6pm.We discussed things such as funding, study rooms and procedure, renovations, various library resources (Documents on Demand), and library events. Despite spending countless hours in the Library each week already, I was unaware of the numerous resources and events that the Library puts on and is involved in.
My overall experience on this committee was a good one. The individuals on this committee provided a fun and inclusive environment during meetings. They always made and effort to ensure that us students knew our opinions and feedback would be appreciated and considered. I enjoyed attending meetings. For students looking to be a apart of a Academic Senate Committee in the future, I would definitely recommend the Library Senate Committee. The committee was even kind enough to give us thank you/going away gift at our last meeting.
